UPDATES/NEWS
Happy New Year Everyone!
There are many happenings afoot in my busy world and I thought it was time to post some updates.

Continuing in 2009, I’ve been writing, recording, performing and producing music mainly in California. Here are some monthly recaps starting with the most recent activities.

APRIL
This month should allow more time for creative activities as my sound designer skills will be once again put to use. People often ask what exactly do I do? Basically, I interpret the requirements of a production in terms of sound collection. I work closely with the Production Mixer, Sound Supervisor, Editor and Director to create original sound elements to meet production requirements of a film using guitars, synthesizers and any number of musical combinations.

I am also in the final phases of mastering the debut EP for the LA-based group Sweetloop in Seattle, which is due for release later this year.

MARCH
San Diego group, The Bigfellas, prepare to go international as festival submissions and tour plans are made. Video concepts are worked out for their song, “I Wish That I Were Gay,” from the Chubbed Up album, and a tentative production schedule is set for early April. Colin Clyne returns to the studio to re-cut vocals for his follow-up release.

FEBRUARY
Music production continued for films and video projects overseas and we scheduled projected release dates for LA-group Sweetloop and Starving Dog Records artist, Colin Clyne.

JANUARY
With renewed energy and excitement I started off the year fielding calls for assistance on new project ideas. We began planning sessions for several groups/artists and the calendar quickly filled up. January 15-18, I returned to Anaheim for the 2009 NAMM show with my guitar sponsor Wilson Guitar Ventures. The festivities were lively as usual which included getting reacquainted with old friends and meeting new ones.

2008 Conclusion
Ended on a high note. The late October release of Hear Something Christmas kept me busy until the end of the year. Promotional activities including; interviews, travel, live performances, television performances and release parties filled much of every waking hour. I managed to spend time with family and friends in the end of December and unfortunately, took ill the early part of January.

TRAVEL
July 2008 - Seattle, Los Angeles and San Diego
More travel and recording are scheduled for the month to work on new music from myself and others. I’ll return to Seattle to begin pre-production on my new single and attend a birthday celebration and wedding. Upon return, I begin recording in Los Angeles and San Diego. Sweetloop Chamber Orchestra will also return to the studio. Colin is preparing for his Critical Mass summer tour of the UK. New Starving Dog Records member, Gerry Perlinski from New Jersey is recording his latest material which will appear on a future release.

RESTING AND MIXING
June 2008 - Santa Barbara, San Diego, Los Angeles
During all this activity I have been attending school and sharpening my skills. The Spring quarter concluded in early June and I got out of town for a couple of days. Santa Barbara is a nice place...I’ll leave it at that. The batteries were recharged a bit. I returned to LA to begin mixing the Sweetloop project and then home to San Diego to prepare for the upcoming Summer quarter activities.

MORE RECORDING
May 2008 - San Diego, LA, San Francisco
My mantra has always been “Activity Breeds Activity.” Colin began a full month of recording and I’m producing again. I also signed on as producer to artist Saul Kaye, Sweetloop Chamber Orchestra and International Male. LA-based Sweetloop began recording their debut EP in mid May. Saul hails from the San Francisco Bay area and is recording a new single titled “Go Down Moses” which will appear on a future Starving Dog Records release. Portland Oregon’s Buddhist Monk Trio began pre-production on their debut single this month as well. Needless to say, I’m excited and exhausted. These are all great artists and I can’t wait for you to hear them!

BACK IN THE STUDIO
April 2008 - San Diego
Pre-production begins on the new Colin Clyne record. We tightened the arrangements and assembled the musicians to begin recording in May.

ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME
INDUCTION CEREMONIES

March 2008 - New York City
I was invited by my good friend and guitar sponsor, Tim Wilson of Wilson Bros. Guitars, to attend the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in New York City. After overcoming delays, bad weather and flight cancellations, I arrived in the city just in time to catch the mega stars at work, performing their material and refining their arrangements during the sound check. Functioning on Starbucks coffee and a slice of pumpkin bread, I was escorted by hotel and VH-1 security to the grand ballroom. The personalities in attendance ran like a who’s who of the music industry. Most everyone was pleasant and generally excited to be in the presence of such greatness.

It was awesome to see musicians reaching out to meet other musicians who have or do inspire themselves in some way or at some time. John Fogerty talked about when got turned on to music at 15 years old listening to the Ventures. Some of musicians in attendance while I was there were, of course, The Ventures, John Mellencamp, John Fogerty and Paul Shaffer. Other artists at sound check included Joan Jett, Billy Joel and Lou Reed. Joan is a pistol! I loved her energy. Madonna did not perform at the ceremony; therefore she did not attend the sound check. I have a few photos to post so check back soon!

The next morning after the haze of the night prior wore off, I spent the day at some of my favorite haunts in the city. I wound up going directly from the clubs to the airport. The plane ride home was hell. I’ll be fine and I can’t wait to return! A really “big” Thank You goes out to Craig, Kim and Mo for having us over, hanging out with me and indulging my entourage. We really had a wonderful time and sincerely appreciate your kindness and generosity. I’ll never look at Central Park in the same way again.

IN THE STUDIO AGAIN
February/March 2008 - Seattle, San Diego and New York
I contributed vocals to the lead off track, “California King,” from the soon to be released Big Fellas CD and shared some production responsibilities as well by coordinating the horn section for three songs using the technical and musical skills of engineer Mark Clem. Saxophone player, Tom Prigmore, who appeared on my previous solo records, layed down some tracks at Soul Kitchen Studios in Seattle. All this took place while I worked remotely from San Diego and New York.

NAMM SHOW
January 2008 - Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA
Well this year’s NAMM show did not disappoint. For those of you that have no idea of what I’m referring to, NAMM provides participants of the music industry with the tools and resources that bring the gift of music into people's lives.

They started in May of 1901 as a small, grassroots organization of 52 founding Members and has since blossomed into an international association representing nearly 9,000 retailers and manufacturers of musical instruments and products from 85 countries worldwide.

A Who’s who of musical celebrities were in attendance to support and promote the various product lines. I had the good fortune of hanging out with some amazing people. A few highlights include having cocktails with Spencer Davis of the Spencer Davis Group ("Gimme Some Lovin’"), Allan White, drummer for the legendary rock band Yes ("Owner of a Lonely Heart") and Chris Slade, drummer for AC/DC ("You Shook Me All Night Long"). Chris is a great guy! We hung out for two days in awe of other musicians in attendance. We’ll have some photos posted here soon.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
January 2008 - San Diego and Los Angeles
The New Year started off with lots of robust activity. The writers' strike negatively affected some of my projects and created good possibilities in other ways. I began consulting on a new project with the LA trio S.L.C.O. They have a magical sound and I look forward to everyone hearing their material soon.

Other activity that month included the return of Starving Dog Records artist Colin Clyne to the states to perform in late January and he also made his Los Angeles debut.

I was able to collaborate with my buddy Brian on his new song “Heal” and took in the Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles.

Best to you all.
Marvin
